Artsakh (historic province)
Artsakh is the historical name of a mountainous region of the South Caucasus corresponding largely to Nagorno-Karabakh. A province of the Kingdom of Armenia in antiquity, it passed to Caucasian Albania after the partition of Armenia around 387. Under Armenian princes such as those of Khachen it kept a strong Christian culture with monasteries like Gandzasar. The name was revived for the unrecognised republic of 1991–2023.
