Gandzasar Monastery

1216–1238 · 13th century

Gandzasar is an Armenian monastery in the mountains of Nagorno-Karabakh, built for Prince Hasan-Jalal Dawla of Khachen, whose Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist was consecrated in 1240. It served for centuries as the seat of the Catholicos of Aghvank and the burial place of the Hasan-Jalalyan princes. Its carved stonework makes it one of the finest monuments of medieval Armenian architecture.
