Gandhinagar is the capital of the Indian state of Gujarat, a planned city on the Sabarmati river north of Ahmedabad named after Mahatma Gandhi. It was built from the 1960s and became the capital in 1970, replacing Ahmedabad. The surrounding Gandhinagar district includes the lands of several former small princely states of the region, such as Pethapur and Mansa.
