Attalus I

269–197 BCE · 3rd century BCE · Also known as Attalus I Soter

Attalus I Soter ruled Pergamon from 241 to 197 BCE. After defeating the Galatians, he took the title of king, the first of his dynasty to do so, and celebrated the victory with monuments that included statues of dying Gauls. He allied with Rome against Philip V of Macedon, beginning the partnership that made the Attalid kingdom Rome's chief friend in Asia Minor.
