Azim ud-Din I of Sulu

18th century · 18th century · Also known as Alimuddin I, Azim ud-Din I

Azim ud-Din I, also called Alimuddin I, was Sultan of Sulu in the eighteenth century. Seeking Spanish help against his brother Bantilan, who had taken power, he went to Manila and was baptised in 1750, an act that divided his court. Suspected by the Spanish of treachery, he was imprisoned in Manila and only returned to Sulu after the British occupation of the city in 1762–1764.
