Badr al-Din Lu'lu'

d. 1259 · 13th century

Badr al-Din Lu'lu' was a freed slave of the Zengid rulers of Mosul who became regent for their young heirs and, from 1234, ruler of Mosul in his own name. He governed for about forty years, patronising metalwork and architecture, and submitted to the Mongols. His sons lost Mosul after his death, and it was sacked by the Mongols in 1262.
