Person
Nur al-Din
Nur al-Din was a Zengid ruler of Syria, based at Damascus, who unified Muslim Syria and led opposition to the Crusader states. He sent forces to Egypt, where his officer Saladin rose to power, and Saladin remained nominally subordinate to him. Nur al-Din's death in 1174 freed Saladin to expand independently and build the Ayyubid Empire.
