Badr al-Jamali

Badr al-Jamali was an Armenian commander who became vizier of the Fatimid Caliphate in 1073 after being summoned to restore order during a severe crisis. He reorganised the army and administration and rebuilt the walls and gates of Cairo, including Bab al-Futuh, Bab al-Nasr and Bab Zuwayla. His rule began a period in which military viziers held real power over the caliphs.
