Baili Xi

7th century BCE · 7th century BCE

Baili Xi was a minister of the State of Qin under Duke Mu in the seventh century BCE. Originally an official of the small state of Yu, he was taken captive when Jin conquered it; tradition says Duke Mu ransomed him for five ram skins. As minister he helped make Qin a major power in the west, and he became a model of the able man discovered in obscurity.
