Bajamonte Tiepolo

fl. 1310 · 14th century

Bajamonte Tiepolo was a Venetian nobleman who led a conspiracy in June 1310 to overthrow Doge Pietro Gradenigo, whose policies, including the closing of the Great Council in 1297, had angered rival noble houses. The plotters were defeated in fighting near St Mark's Square, and Tiepolo was sent into exile. In response the republic set up the Council of Ten, which became a permanent organ of state security.
