Marino Faliero

c. 1285–1355 · 14th century

Marino Faliero was Doge of Venice from 1354 to 1355. An experienced commander and diplomat, he was elected in old age and within months plotted with commoners to overthrow the patrician government and make himself prince. The plot was betrayed, and he was tried by the Council of Ten and beheaded in April 1355; his portrait in the Doge's Palace was replaced by a black veil.
