Baji Rao II

1775–1851 · 19th century

Baji Rao II was the last Peshwa of the Maratha Empire, ruling from Pune from 1795 to 1818. Driven out by Yashwantrao Holkar, he accepted British protection in the Treaty of Bassein in 1802, which helped provoke the Second Anglo-Maratha War. He rose against the British in 1817, was defeated in the Third Anglo-Maratha War and surrendered in 1818, after which the office of Peshwa was abolished and he lived on a pension at Bithur until his death.
