Third Battle of Panipat

1761 · 18th century

The Third Battle of Panipat was fought in 1761 near Panipat in northern India between the Maratha Empire and the invading army of the Afghan ruler Ahmad Shah Durrani and his allies. It was one of the largest battles of the eighteenth century and ended in a crushing Maratha defeat with very heavy losses. Accounts of the Maratha Empire treat it as a turning point that halted Maratha expansion in the north.
