Balambangan Island

1775 · 18th century

Balambangan Island is an island off the northern tip of Borneo, in present-day Sabah, Malaysia. In 1773 the British East India Company founded a trading post there, intended to tap the trade between China and the Sulu and Malay worlds. In 1775 Tausug warriors attacked and destroyed the settlement; a second attempt in 1803–1805 was also abandoned.
