Balash

r. 484–488 · 5th century · Also known as Valakhsh

Balash was king of the Sasanian Empire from 484 to 488, succeeding his brother Peroz I, who died fighting the Hephthalites. Facing an exhausted treasury and unrest in the Caucasus, he reached a settlement with the Armenian rebels that granted freedom of Christian worship and restored the Albanian monarchy under Vachagan III. He was deposed in 488 in favour of his nephew Kavad I.
