Battle of Avarayr

451 · 5th century

The Battle of Avarayr was fought in 451 on the Avarayr plain, south-east of Lake Van in the historical province of Vaspurakan, between Armenian rebels led by Vardan Mamikonian and the army of the Sasanian king Yazdegerd II, who sought to impose Zoroastrianism. The Armenians were defeated and Vardan was killed, but resistance continued, and the Armenian Church remembers the battle as a defence of the faith.
