Battle of Ayacucho

1824 · 19th century · Part of the Spanish American wars of independence

The Battle of Ayacucho was fought on 9 December 1824 in the Peruvian highlands, where a patriot army under Antonio José de Sucre defeated and captured the Spanish viceroy José de la Serna. The capitulation that followed ended the royalist army in Peru and effectively ended Spanish rule in continental South America, opening the way to the independence of Upper Peru as Bolivia.
