Bamar people

Also known as Burmans, Bamar

The Bamar, or Burmans, are the largest ethnic group of Myanmar, forming about two-thirds of its population and living mainly in the central Irrawaddy valley. Speakers of Burmese, a Sino-Tibetan language, they moved south into the dry zone of central Myanmar in the ninth century and founded the Pagan Kingdom, and most of the later Burmese kingdoms were Bamar-led states. Most Bamar are Theravada Buddhists.
