Basay

Also known as Basay people

The Basay were an Austronesian indigenous people of northern Taiwan, living around the harbours of Keelung and Tamsui and along the north-east coast. Known as traders, metalworkers and boatmen, they dealt with Chinese and Japanese merchants and later with the Spanish, who settled among them from 1626, and the Dutch. Under Qing rule they were gradually assimilated, and their language is now extinct.
