Battle of Amalinde

1818 · 19th century

The Battle of Amalinde was fought in 1818 in what is now the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, between rival Xhosa forces. Warriors of the regent Ndlambe, joined by Hintsa's Gcaleka, defeated his nephew Ngqika, who then sought help from the Cape Colony. The British intervention that followed led to the frontier war of 1818–1819.
