Phalo

c. 1702–1775 · 18th century

Phalo (c. 1702–1775) was a paramount chief of the Xhosa in what is now the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Under him the Xhosa moved west towards the Fish River and absorbed Khoikhoi groups. A dispute between his sons Gcaleka and Rharhabe split the Xhosa into two kingdoms, and after his death around 1775 Gcaleka ruled east of the Kei River and Rharhabe to the west.
