Battle of Bulgarophygon

896 · 9th century · Part of the Byzantine–Bulgarian war of 894–896

The Battle of Bulgarophygon was fought in 896 near the town of that name in eastern Thrace, now Babaeski in Turkey. Simeon I of Bulgaria destroyed a Byzantine army after his Pecheneg allies had driven Byzantium's allies, the Magyars, from their lands north of the Danube. The peace that followed obliged Byzantium to pay Bulgaria an annual tribute.
