Battle of Chausa

1539 · 16th century

The Battle of Chausa was fought in June 1539 near Chausa on the Ganges in Bihar, where the Afghan leader Sher Khan surprised and routed the army of the Mughal emperor Humayun. Humayun barely escaped by swimming the river. The victory let Sher Khan proclaim himself Sher Shah, and after a second victory at Kannauj in 1540 he drove the Mughals out of India.
