Battle of Chelenqo

1887 · 19th century

The Battle of Chelenqo was fought on 6 January 1887 in eastern Ethiopia between the army of Menelik II, then king of Shewa, and the forces of Emir Abdullahi of Harar. Menelik's victory led to the occupation of Harar and its annexation to his realm, a key step in the southern and eastern expansion of the Ethiopian Empire. His cousin Ras Makonnen, father of Haile Selassie, became governor of Harar.
