Humayun

1508–1556 · 16th century

Humayun was the second Mughal emperor, son and successor of Babur, who ruled from 1530 to 1540 and again in 1555–1556. Defeated by Sher Shah Suri at Chausa in 1539 and Kannauj in 1540, he lost his kingdom and spent years as a fugitive in Sindh, where his son Akbar was born in 1542, and in Safavid Iran. He recovered Delhi in 1555 but died the next year after a fall.
