Battle of France
The Battle of France was the German invasion of France and the Low Countries in May and June 1940. German armoured forces broke through the Ardennes, where the Allies least expected an attack, reached the English Channel and trapped the British, French and Belgian armies in the north; more than 330,000 Allied soldiers were evacuated from Dunkirk. Paris fell on 14 June, and on 22 June the French government of Philippe Pétain signed an armistice that left Germany occupying the north and west of the country.
