Battle of Gravelines (1558)

1558 · 16th century · Part of the Italian War of 1551–1559

The Battle of Gravelines was fought on 13 July 1558 near Gravelines on the coast of Flanders. A Spanish army under Lamoral, Count of Egmont, supported by fire from English ships, destroyed a French force under Marshal de Termes that had raided Dunkirk. Together with Saint-Quentin the year before, the victory pushed France to accept the Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis in 1559.
