Lamoral, Count of Egmont

1522–1568 · 16th century · Also known as Count Egmont

Lamoral, Count of Egmont (1522–1568), was a general and statesman of the Habsburg Netherlands, celebrated for his victories over the French at Saint-Quentin in 1557 and Gravelines in 1558. With William of Orange and Count Horne he led the noble opposition to Philip II's policies. The Duke of Alba had Egmont and Horne beheaded in Brussels in 1568, which fuelled the Dutch Revolt and inspired Goethe's play Egmont.
