Battle of Lake Maracaibo

1823 · 19th century · Part of the Spanish American wars of independence

The Battle of Lake Maracaibo was a naval battle fought on 24 July 1823 on Lake Maracaibo in western Venezuela. The Gran Colombian squadron of Admiral José Prudencio Padilla defeated the Spanish flotilla of Ángel Laborde. The defeat led to the surrender of the royalists in Maracaibo and, in November, of Puerto Cabello, ending Spanish resistance in Venezuela.
