Battle of Marciano

1554 · 16th century · Also known as Battle of Scannagallo · Part of the Italian War of 1551–1559

The Battle of Marciano, also called Scannagallo, was fought on 2 August 1554 in the Valdichiana between the forces of Cosimo I de' Medici and the Emperor Charles V and a Franco-Sienese army under Piero Strozzi. Strozzi's defeat left Siena isolated, and after a long siege the city surrendered in 1555. Its territory was later granted to Cosimo, a decisive step towards the creation of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
