Battle of Marengo

1800 · 19th century · Part of the War of the Second Coalition

The Battle of Marengo was fought on 14 June 1800 near Alessandria in Piedmont between the French army of the First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte and an Austrian army under General Michael von Melas. Close to defeat in the afternoon, the French won after the arrival of General Desaix's division; Desaix was killed in the counter-attack. The victory restored French control of northern Italy and strengthened Napoleon's position in France.
