Valtellina

The Valtellina is the valley of the upper Adda river in Lombardy, northern Italy, running east from Lake Como towards the Stelvio pass. The Three Leagues of the Grisons conquered it in 1512 and ruled it as a subject land; a Catholic rising and massacre of Protestants in 1620, the Sacro Macello, made it a contested corridor in the Thirty Years' War. In 1797 it broke away and joined Napoleon's Cisalpine Republic.
