Chiavenna

Chiavenna is a town in Lombardy, northern Italy, where the routes over the Splügen and Maloja passes from Switzerland meet. Long a staging post on Alpine trade routes, it was conquered by the Three Leagues of the Grisons in 1512 and governed by them as a subject county until 1797. It then joined Napoleon's Cisalpine Republic and later became part of Lombardy.
