Chiaramonte family

13th–14th centuries · 13th century · Also known as Chiaramonte

The Chiaramonte were a Sicilian baronial family, counts of Modica, who became one of the most powerful houses of the island under the Aragonese kings of Sicily in the fourteenth century. They built the Palazzo Chiaramonte, known as the Steri, in Palermo. Their power ended when Andrea Chiaramonte resisted the Aragonese restoration and was executed in Palermo in 1392.
