Valuk

fl. c. 631 · 7th century

Valuk is the first known ruler of the Slavs of Carantania, mentioned in the chronicle of Fredegar as 'duke of the Wends' around 631. He was probably allied with Samo, whose tribal union resisted the Avars and the Franks. Fredegar records that he gave refuge to a group of Bulgars fleeing the Avars.
