Battle of Meloria (1284)
The Battle of Meloria was a naval battle fought on 6 August 1284 near the islet of Meloria off Livorno between Genoa and Pisa. The Genoese fleet under Oberto Doria and Benedetto Zaccaria destroyed the Pisan fleet and took thousands of prisoners, many of whom died in captivity. The defeat ended Pisa's power as a maritime republic and left Genoa dominant in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
