Battle of Nalapani

1814 · 19th century · Also known as Battle of Khalanga, Siege of Kalunga · Part of the Anglo-Nepalese War

The Battle of Nalapani was the first major engagement of the Anglo-Nepalese War, fought in October and November 1814 at the hill fort of Khalanga (Kalunga) near Dehradun. A small Gorkhali garrison under Balbhadra Kunwar repulsed repeated British assaults, killing General Robert Rollo Gillespie, before abandoning the fort when its water ran out. Both sides honoured the defenders with memorials.
