Battle of Renfrew

1164 · 12th century

The Battle of Renfrew was fought in 1164 near Renfrew on the Clyde, when Somerled, King of the Isles, invaded the Scottish kingdom with a large fleet drawn from Argyll, the Isles and Dublin. Somerled was killed early in the engagement, possibly by treachery, and his army dispersed. His death left his lands divided among his sons, ancestors of the MacDougalls, MacDonalds and MacRuairis.
