Battle of Širvintos

1920 · 20th century · Part of the Polish–Lithuanian War

The Battle of Širvintos was fought on 17–21 November 1920 near the town of Širvintos, north-west of Vilnius, between Lithuanian forces and the Polish troops of Lucjan Żeligowski, who had seized Vilnius in October. Together with the simultaneous Battle of Giedraičiai, it halted the Polish advance into Lithuania proper. A ceasefire followed under League of Nations supervision, but Vilnius remained in Polish hands.
