Battle of Sluys

24 June 1340 · 14th century · Also known as Battle of l'Écluse · Part of the Hundred Years' War

The Battle of Sluys was a naval battle fought on 24 June 1340 in the Zwin estuary off Sluis in Flanders, early in the Hundred Years' War. The English fleet of Edward III attacked the French fleet assembled for an invasion of England and destroyed it almost entirely. The victory gave England control of the Channel for years and allowed its armies to land in France.
