Battle of Strasbourg

357 · 4th century · Also known as Battle of Argentoratum

The Battle of Strasbourg, or Argentoratum, was fought in August 357 near Strasbourg between a Roman army under the Caesar Julian and a coalition of Alemannic kings led by Chnodomar and his nephew Serapio. Julian's roughly 13,000 men defeated a force that Ammianus Marcellinus put at some 35,000; Chnodomar was captured and sent to Rome. The victory restored Roman control of the Rhine frontier and made Julian's reputation.
