Battle of the Süntel

782 · 8th century · Part of the Saxon Wars

The Battle of the Süntel was fought in 782 in the Süntel hills near the Weser, in present-day Lower Saxony, when a Saxon army raised by Widukind destroyed a Frankish force that had been sent against the Sorbs. The defeat provoked Charlemagne's harsh response, the massacre of Verden, in which according to the Royal Frankish Annals some 4,500 Saxons were beheaded.
