Battle of the Teutoburg Forest

9 CE · 1st century · Also known as Teutoburg

The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest was fought in 9 CE in Germania, where Germanic tribes led by Arminius ambushed and destroyed three Roman legions under Publius Quinctilius Varus. It was one of the worst defeats in Roman military history. The disaster ended Roman efforts to conquer Germania east of the Rhine, which became a lasting frontier of the Roman Empire.
