Germania
Germania was the Roman name for the lands east of the Rhine and north of the Danube inhabited by Germanic peoples, which Rome never permanently conquered after its defeat in the Teutoburg Forest in 9 CE. The name was also given to the Roman provinces of Germania Inferior and Germania Superior on the left bank of the Rhine. Tacitus described its peoples in his ethnography Germania of 98 CE.
