Bawa Jan Gwarzo

r. 1771–1789 · 18th century · Also known as Bawa of Gobir

Bawa Jan Gwarzo was sarkin, or king, of the Hausa state of Gobir in present-day northern Nigeria and Niger. A Muslim ruler who tolerated older religious practices, he invited the Fulani scholar Usman dan Fodio to his court and granted concessions to his community. Under his successors relations broke down, and in 1804 Usman dan Fodio declared the jihad that destroyed Gobir's power.
