Bengal Subah

1576–1757 · 16th century · Also known as Mughal Bengal

The Bengal Subah was the province of the Mughal Empire covering Bengal, roughly present-day Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal, at times with parts of Bihar and Odisha. Conquered from the Karrani sultans in 1576, it became one of the empire's richest provinces, known for textiles and rice. Its governors fought repeated wars with the Ahom kingdom, and from 1717 the Nawabs of Bengal ruled it with growing independence until the British victory at Plassey in 1757.
