Bernard of Septimania

c. 795–844 · 9th century

Bernard of Septimania was a Frankish noble, son of William of Gellone, who held the counties of Barcelona and Septimania and led the defence of the Spanish March against the Umayyads. In 829 Louis the Pious made him chamberlain, and his influence at court helped provoke rebellion by the emperor's sons. He was executed for treason by Charles the Bald in 844.
