The Biblioteca Estense is the library of the Este family, moved from Ferrara to Modena in 1598 when the dukes lost Ferrara to the Papal States. The historian Ludovico Antonio Muratori served as its librarian. It holds rich collections of manuscripts, including the illuminated Bible of Borso d'Este, one of the masterpieces of Renaissance book painting.
