Bibi Khanym Mosque

1399–1404 · 14th century

The Bibi Khanym Mosque is a monumental congregational mosque in Samarkand, built for Timur between 1399 and 1404 after his Indian campaign and named after his chief wife. One of the largest mosques of its age, with a vast courtyard, towering portal and blue-tiled domes, it began to decay soon after completion because of its hurried construction. It has been extensively restored since the 1970s.
