Big Bear

c. 1825–1888 · 19th century · Also known as Mistahimaskwa

Big Bear, Mistahimaskwa in Cree, was a Plains Cree chief who long refused to sign Treaty 6 with Canada, holding out for better terms until 1882 as the bison disappeared. During the North-West Rebellion of 1885 warriors of his band killed settlers at Frog Lake against his wishes. He surrendered and was imprisoned for treason, and died soon after his release.
